[ENGRAVING] FETE DONNEE AU GENERAL DENTRECASTEAUX PAR TOUBAU, ROI DES ILES DES AMIS. (Tonga) LABILLARDIERE, Jacques Julien Houton de.
24206 Plate 26 from the Atlas volume of 'Relation du voyage a la recherche de la Perouse....par le citoyen La Billardiere'. H. J. Jansen, Paris, 1799. First Edition. Engraving (landscape format), 25 x 40 cm., paper size 30 x 44 cm., uncoloured, no foxing or marks, VG. This engraving is from the rare 1799 Atlas of the first French account of the d'Entrecasteaux expedition in search of La Perouse. Labillardiere was the chief naturalist aboard Bruni d'Entrecasteaux's La Recherche in the 1791-94 search for La Perouse. The unsuccessful voyage ended tragically with many deaths, including that of d'Entrecasteaux. Labillardiere was not able to return to a France mired in troubles after the Revolution until 1796. He then had to negotiate the return of the voyage's natural history collections and Piron's drawings which had been captured by the British. His account of the voyage was eventually published in France in 1799. $150.00AUD Click here to order or message the dealer
