23823 Dumont d'Urville Voyage Atlas, Paris, 1830-35. Hand-coloured lithograph, 37 x 27 cms., wide margins, no flaws, VG. Original litho - not a reproduction. Lithograph from a drawing made by a very young draughtsman aboard the Astrolabe on the Dumont d'Urville expedition. The voyage left from Toulon on 25 April 1826 to explore coasts and islands in the southern Pacific including stops in Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. The Astrolabe returned to Marseilles in February 1829 with an astonishing amount of new scientific knowledge. D'Urville's account was published in the early years of the 1830s, with the sumptuous atlas containing these hand-coloured plates appearing in 1835. Paris went on to much fame with other explorations, finishing his career as a vice admiral and curator of the naval museum in the Louvre. $250.00AUD
