1750s MAP OF BATAVIA (Jakarta) in 1731. BELLIN, Jacques-Nicolas (engraved by J. v. Schley).
23468 Paris, 1746 - 70. Hand-coloured engraved map (original colour), 22.5 x 44 cms., wide margins, no foxing. In 1619 the Dutch East India Company based in Bantam on the Sunda Strait invaded a small Javanese village to the east called Jacatra, burned it to the ground and built a new fortress and trading post that became their main base in the East Indies - they named it Batavia. This map is from Antoine Prévost's 'Histoire générale des Voyages' published in Paris between 1746 and 1770, and shows the town as it was in 1731. Bantam remains important in Australian history as it was from here that Janszoon's expedition left in 1605 to become the first Europeans to land in Australia in 1606.
