(TAHITI) MAISON DE MONSIEUR PRITCHARD A PAPE-ITI (Ile Taiti). Le BRETON, Louis.
22799 Paris, 1841-54. First edition. Hand-coloured lithograph, 21 x 35 cms., wide margins, no foxing or marks, VG Plate 63 from the sumptuous ATLAS PITTORESQUE of the "Voyage au Pole Sud et dans l'Oceanie" published 1841-54 after the expedition's return to France in 1840. Dumont d'Urville's second expedition spent September 1838 in Tahiti, trying to get rights for French missionaries to spread the catholic word among the Tahitians. Unfortunately for them the English Missionary, Pritchard was firmly in control of the island through his influence over Queen Pomare. Pritchard virulently opposed the French and d'Urville records that " he lived like the real king of the island". The print shows Pritchard's Union Jack flying defiantly over his compound. $250.00AUD Click here to order or message the dealer
